Experts of the Auto Market Research Institute analyzed the statistics of vehicle registrations in Ukraine and identified the top models in three segments of trucks weighing more than 3.5 tons (except tractor-trailers): used import, domestic resale and purchase of new cars, including those converted in Ukraine.
Truck market dynamics
In September 2022, Ukrainians purchased 1.9 thousand trucks with a gross weight of more than 3.5 tons (excluding tractors). This is 36.9% less than in the same period last year and 4.7% more than in August 2022.
The total volume of the truck market in Ukraine today is about 2,000 vehicles per month. Most of them were purchased on the domestic market (1.7 thousand units). At the same time, the share of cars purchased domestically has been increasing since the cancellation of the so-called "zero" customs clearance. In September, if compared with August, the increase was 7.5%. At the same time, the share of domestic resales was the largest in the last 12 months: 86.6% of the total number of purchased trucks.
Very few new trucks are bought: in September, 37 imported and 48 converted trucks were registered in Ukraine. In total, the share of new trucks with a total weight of more than 3 tons in the structure of sales is only 4.4%.
It is interesting that the average age of trucks on the market is growing for the fourth month in a row. In September, the indicator was fixed at the level of 21.2 years. Thus, trucks remain the oldest segment of the Ukrainian car market, and the process of rejuvenation has stopped due to a reduction in the import of used cars from abroad.
The most popular trucks in the domestic market
Mercedes-Benz vehicles were most often chosen (16.6%). In second place is MAN (13.2%).
The third to fifth places were taken by the legacy of the past era, the Soviet-Russian ZIL (11.6%), KamAZ (10.7%) and GAZ (9.3%).
Mercedes-Benz T1/T2 remains the leader (100 units). The chassis of these cars, which have not been produced since the mid-90s of the last century, are used as a platform for various superstructures.
In second place is Mercedes-Benz Atego (68 units), and in third place is another universal platform Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (59 units).
The fourth and fifth places are occupied by two KamAZs — 5320 and 5511 (57 and 56 units, respectively). In total, of the 10 most popular models of trucks on the domestic market, four are products of the Soviet-Russian automobile industry.
- Mercedes-Benz T1/T2 — 100 pcs.
- Mercedes-Benz Atego — 68 pcs.
- Mercedes-Benz Sprinter — 59 pcs.
- KamAZ 5320 — 57 pcs.
- KamAZ 5511 — 56 pcs.
- MAN L2000 — 47 pcs.
- ZIL 130 — 46 pcs.
- GAZ 3507 — 44 pcs.
- MAN TGA — 44 pcs.
- MAN TGL — 42 pcs.
The most popular used trucks brought from abroad
Used trucks of the Mercedes-Benz (32.2%), MAN (26.3%) and Iveco (12.9%) brands were most often imported from abroad in September 2022.
DAF (9.9%) and Volvo (8.2%) were also popular.
The leaders among the models were Mercedes-Benz Atrgo (25 units), MAN TGL (18 units) and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (16 units).
It is these trucks that could gradually replace old vehicles of Russian and Soviet production. However , the 40 times higher excise duty on cars older than 5 years and the ecological standard "Euro-5" do not allow the import of these cars in large quantities, because it is often economically unprofitable. The law that temporarily lowered the environmental standard to "Euro-3" has so many conditions and restrictions that in practice it did not have any effect: only 8 vehicles used it from the beginning of its operation until the end of September.
- Mercedes-Benz Atego — 25 pcs.
- MAN TGL — 18 pcs.
- Mercedes-Benz Sprinter — 16 pcs.
- Iveco Daily (Turbo/Power) — 14 pcs.
- MAN TGS — 12 pcs.
- DAF XF — 8 pcs.
- MAN TGM — 7 pcs.
- Mercedes-Benz Axor — 7 pcs.
- DAF LF — 6 pcs.
- Volvo FH — 6 pcs.
The most popular new trucks
Among new trucks in September, Mercedes-Benz (17.6%), Ford (10.6%) and SBM (9.4%) were chosen the most. The latter belongs to the company "Budshlyakhmash", which manufactures specialized cars on the chassis of imported trucks.
In total, out of the 10 most popular brands, 6 are Ukrainian enterprises that, in small batches, are engaged in converting imported trucks for various needs. Such cars are often chosen because of their lower cost compared to imported counterparts.
The number of new truck models in September was so small that it is impossible to make a complete model rating.
