Experts of the Auto Market Research Institute analyzed vehicle registration statistics in Ukraine and identified the most popular models of small commercial vehicles in three segments: used import, domestic resale, and new car purchases.
LCV market dynamics
In September, Ukrainians purchased 4,600 light commercial vehicles with a gross weight of up to 3.5 tons. This is 29% less than in the same period last year, and 2.8% more than in August 2022.
The majority of small commercial cars in the first half of 2022 were purchased on the domestic market: 3.5 thousand (76.3%). This is the highest figure in the last 12 months.
Only 793 used LCVs were brought from abroad, while their share decreased from 23.8% to 17.4% compared to September 2021. Quantitatively, the import of light commercial trucks with mileage decreased by almost half: by -48.1%. Compared to August 2022, the drop was -13.3%.
260 light trucks were purchased new, which is 5.7% of the total number of sales transactions. The decline in sales in this market segment amounted to -48.2%, if compared with September 2021. If we compare it with August 2022, sales have increased by 66.7%.
The share of production of Ukrainian enterprises, which in small batches carry out conversion of new imported LCVs for special needs, amounted to 0.6%. In September, only 28 such vehicles were registered for the first time, which is -89.5% less than in the same period last year and two cars more than in August 2022.
In general, we can state the gradual growth of the market of small commercial vehicles for the second month in a row. The demand for cars of this category is currently mostly provided by the offer of used cars on the domestic market, the share of which is growing. Instead, imports of used LCVs are falling due to the cancellation of the so-called "zero" customs clearance, changes in the exchange rate and higher prices of cars abroad. Sales of new cars are small, but show growth.
