If a car becomes unusable due to old age, wear, or damage as a result of an accident, there is one last documentary operation that needs to be carried out with it — deregistration due to scrapping. This service is provided by the service centers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs free of charge, but it should be noted that a scrapped car can never be put back on the register. Every month, Ukrainians apply for this service more than two thousand times.
Passenger cars are most often written off, in particular, there were 1,666 requests for their scrapping during August 2025. 405 trucks and 73 buses were also permanently removed from the roads.
IDA specialists have identified the top 10 models of vehicles that were officially deregistered due to scrapping. Most often, you can see various products from VAZ here — almost the entire "classic" family, supplemented by the "nine" and the 99th model. They are accompanied by three more locally produced cars — "Tavria" and its derivative "Slavuta", as well as a "product of the national automobile industry" with Korean roots — Daewoo Lanos.
Most of the culling is due to the age of the vehicles, which is confirmed by the average age of the vehicles that underwent this operation last month — 28 years for cars and trucks, and 26 years for buses.
Among all the cars from which license plates were removed forever during the specified period, the GAZ-21 Volga sedan lasted the longest — it was released in 1957.
