Specialists of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed data from the aggregator Automoto.ua, which collects information from the main sites for the sale of automotive equipment in Ukraine, and identified the 10 most popular car brands with which the most ads were created during the past 2024. It is worth noting that these data reflect the structure of supply, not demand, since they are obtained from the array of ads from all sites for the sale of cars in Ukraine.
Two brands emerged as market leaders: Volkswagen and VAZ, and quantitatively they clearly contrast with the rest.
1. Volkswagen

- Number of ads created per year : 293,618 (18.4% of the total)
Volkswagen has been the leader of the Ukrainian market for many years. The reason for its popularity is the brandʼs reputation, primarily among auto mechanics, who in turn recommend this brand to their clients, potential buyers, as reliable and versatile, or rather, maintainable. In addition, a large number of cars are imported from Europe, where Volkswagen is one of the most popular brands.
2. VAZ (Lada)

- Average mileage : 192 thousand km
- Average price : $1,100
- Number of ads : 283,952 (17.8% of the total)
VAZ is in second place due to historical circumstances. While new perfect products appeared in the markets of developed countries in conditions of open competition, in the countries of the socialist camp, within the framework of a planned economy and the absence of competition (and the presence of a shortage of even outdated low-quality cars), only models specified by the party were conditionally available to the population. Among them, the products of the Volga Automobile Plant were endowed with the smallest bouquet of problems, so the "Lada" and "Zhiguli" were the most desirable purchase in the then closed market. During the Soviet regime, the car fleet was filled with nothing but local products, mostly VAZs. Now, despite its considerable age (and the rather strange average mileage in the ads, for cars about 30 years old), for $1,100 you can buy a car that is easy to repair and capable of moving independently, which completes the description of the complex of reasons why VAZs are still present in such significant numbers in ads on our secondary market.
3. BMW
- Average age : 15.7 years
- Average mileage : 218 thousand km
- Average price : $10,400
- Number of ads : 147,954 (9.3% of the total)
BMW ranks third in this ranking, despite the higher average price. The reason is the image and prestige associated with owning a car of this brand. Even older models remain in demand due to their technical characteristics and comfort. Another factor is the availability of cars from American auctions, which also plays a role in the popularity of a particular brand on the market.
Market: mix of budget and premium brands
Volkswagen and VAZ represent two different categories: the first is a well-known European brand with a mid-price segment, the second is an affordable car for a super-minimum budget. That is why they satisfy the needs of different social groups.
BMW (as well as Audi and Mercedes-Benz, which are not far behind this brand in terms of quantity), for their part, illustrates the stability of Ukrainian motoristsʼ interest in prestigious cars, even on the secondary market.
The presence of Renault, Ford, Skoda, Opel, and Nissan in the top ten ads is explained by quite obvious factors: these are popular practical cars at a reasonable price, for which they are valued not only in Ukraine, but also in those countries where they are represented in the primary or secondary markets.
