Electric cars with mileage make up less than 1% of all used car deals sold on the local OTOMOTO marketplace. At the same time, a study conducted in August this year by Minds & Roses showed that 43% of Poles would like to buy a used electric car.
During the New Mobility Congress 2023, which took place last week in Poland, OTOMOTO presented the report " The Future of the Used Electric Car Market in Poland ", which combined data from the marketplace with research conducted by the Minds & Roses agency this year.
The popularity of electric cars is growing
As of the end of July, more than 47,000 electric cars were registered in Poland, which means an increase of as much as 58% compared to the previous year. Growth is also observed in the offer of cars — by the end of July 2023, 110% more offers for the sale of used cars and 70% more new electric vehicles appeared on OTOMOTO than in the same period in 2022. However, the number of cars on sale is insufficient.
It is interesting that the majority of electric cars registered in Poland were purchased new, but a significant group of respondents declared their intention to purchase a used electric car. During the PSPAʼs May 2023 EV Experience, Minds & Roses conducted research which revealed that 1/3 of the EV owners who attended the event purchased their vehicle from the aftermarket.
Used electric cars are chosen because of the lower price
The price of an electric car is a determining factor in the purchase decision, both for electric car advocates and for those who are skeptical of this form of transportation. According to the results of the August M&R study, buyers of electric cars are ready to consider a used model precisely because of its lower price ( 38% of respondents). On the other hand, 58% of those who refuse to buy a car with an electric motor claim that the main reason is its too high price.
Now on OTOMOTO, taking into account offers from all segments, including premium cars, the average price of a new car exceeds PLN 300,000 (≈$69,000). This is more than the maximum price of a new electric car, for which you can get a subsidy under the My Electrician program, which operates in Poland. At the same time, these subsidies are not provided to those who decide to buy a used electric car, although the price is lower compared to new ones: for OTOMOTO it is about 178 thousand zlotys (≈$41 thousand).
The most popular used electric cars in Poland
In the first ten electric cars with mileage, which are viewed most often on OTOMOTO, you can find cars of various segments. Tesla Model 3 took first place, followed by Nissan Leaf, which is much more affordable. In general, in the top 10 you can find both small cars, such as BMW i3 or Renault Zoe, and premium class cars, such as Porsche Taycan or Audi E-Tron.
At the same time, 7 out of 10 electric cars, whose sales announcements are viewed most often in Poland, and are offered for sale the most, reports OTOMOTO.
For comparison, the average price of a used car in Ukraine, according to the Institute of Car Market Research, is $19,900, but the used Nissan Leaf has been leading the rating for many years in a row, with a large margin from the nearest competitor.
