In August, Ukrainians bought the most new cars since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. Top 20 models
Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of vehicle registrations in August 2023, described the market dynamics and identified the 15 most popular new passenger cars of the month.
Dynamics of the new car market
In August, Ukrainians purchased 6,000 new cars. This is 46.7% more than in August 2022 and 13.3% more than in July 2023. Such a figure turned out to be a record not only for the last 12 months, but also since the time of the full-scale invasion. Thus, the market of new cars in Ukraine is gradually recovering and growing, but it is still far from the indicators that were before February 24, 2022: at that time, on average, about 10,000 cars were sold every month.
In general, from January to August 2023, Ukrainians registered 39,900 new cars for the first time, which is 58.3% more than in the same period of 2022, and even 8 hundred cars more than in the whole of 2022 in general.
Most new cars in August ( 90.6%, 5,468 units) were imported from abroad. The share of passenger cars manufactured in Ukraine by the method of large-unit assembly or converted from imported machine kits was 9.4% (565 units).
Buyers of new cars in August were mostly individuals (67%, 3,808 units), and legal entities bought 1,879 cars (33%).
The largest number of new cars were registered last month in the city of Kyiv (2,159 units) and the Kyiv region (688 units) — together, this is almost half ( 47.2% ) of the total number of new cars registered for the first time in August. They were also actively registered in Dnipropetrovsk (512), Odesa (372) and Lviv (342) regions.
The fewest new cars were first registered in Kherson (2), Luhansk (11) , Donetsk (18) , Chernivtsi (49) and Chernihiv (60).regions
The majority of cars were purchased by individuals ( 67.8%, 3,546 units), the remaining 32.2% (1,686 units) — legal entities (firms and state structures).
The most popular new imported cars
Most often, in August, as in the previous month, when buying a new passenger car, Ukrainians chose Toyota (987 units, 16.4%). The second place was taken by the Volkswagen brand (635 units, 10.5%).
The Renault brand took third place (472 units, 7.8%), and BMW rose to fourth (435 units, 7.2%). Skoda closes the top five (400 units, 6.6%).
Among the models in the eighth month of 2023 , Renault Duster remains the best-selling model (355 units). Toyota RAV-4 took second place (307 units). The third step was taken by the electric Volkswagen ID.4 (271 units).
According to the results of July , Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (154 units) rose to fourth place, and Toyota Camry (150 units) took sixth place.
At the same time, the trend towards crossovers will continue to persist on the market: the majority of them in the top 20 will continue to be 14 civilian and one police.

Among the new passenger cars manufactured or converted in Ukraine and registered in July, the most popular was the Skoda Kodiaq (104 units), which is manufactured at the Transcarpathian factory "Evrokar" using the large-unit assembly method, as well as the police Renault Duster (103 units) and the Toyota Corolla ( 91 pcs.). The SKS company is engaged in the conversion of the latter.
