Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of registration operations in May 2023 and determined what is happening with the sales of used cars. Despite the situation in the country, Ukrainians continue to be actively interested in buying cars with mileage.
In May, Ukrainians bought 101.7 thousand used cars. This is 20.4% less than in the same period last year in 2022, when the so-called "zero" customs clearance was in effect, and 8.8% more than in April 2023. This indicator turned out to be the highest in the last 10 months — since July 2022.
However, most cars with mileage were purchased on the domestic market. Thus, according to the results of May, the share of domestic resales amounted to 83.6% of the total number of sales of used cars (85 thousand).
The share of imported cars with mileage from abroad amounted to 16.4% (16.7 thousand).
Internal resales
On the domestic market, Ukrainians concluded 85,000 sales and purchase agreements for used cars in May. This is 88.9% more than in May 2022, when the majority of used cars on the market were imported from abroad. If compared with the previous month, April 2023, sales were 8.3% higher.
The largest number of registration transactions on the domestic market was recorded in the city of Kyiv : 13.5 thousand. Together with the Kyiv region, which took third place in the rating with 8.6 thousand registrations, they make up 21.7% of the total number of used cars sold domestically during May.
Dnipropetrovsk (2nd place, 9.6 thousand), Lviv (4th place, 7.7 thousand) and Odesa (5th place, 7.2 thousand) regions are also traditionally included in the top 5 most active regions in terms of domestic resale of used cars .
The smallest number of agreements was concluded in regions whose territories are temporarily occupied or where active hostilities are taking place: Kherson (269 agreements), Luhansk (486 agreements) and Donetsk (1,086 agreements) regions. Mykolayivska (2,000 deals) and Chernihivska (2,100 deals) were also among the top 5 regions with the lowest number of used car sales.region
Import of used cars
In May 2023, 16,700 used cars were brought from abroad. This indicator is 79.8% less than in May 2022, when the so-called "zero" customs clearance was still in effect, and 11.3% more than in April 2022.
Like last month, used cars from abroad were most actively registered in Lviv Oblast (2,100 units), Kyiv (1,400 units) and Vinnytsia (1,200 units) regions.
Rivne (1.1 thousand) and Kyiv (1 thousand) regions were also among the most active regions in May. At the same time, in total, Kyiv together with Kyiv Region make up the majority of the market: 14.4%.
The fewest "freshly driven" cars were registered in Kherson (21), Donetsk (73), Luhansk (111), Mykolayiv (208) and Zaporizhia (240) regions.
