Experts of the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed the statistics of registration operations in April 2023 and determined what is happening with the sales of used cars. In the first month of spring, sales of used cars in Ukraine increased significantly. Mainly due to an increase in the number of internal resales.
In April, Ukrainians purchased 93,500 used cars. This is 47.2% more than in the same period of last year 2022 and only 2.9% less than in March 2023. That is, high activity on the used car market after the peak in March (96.3 thousand) continues.
The share of domestic resales remains consistently high: 83.9% of the total number of used car sales (78.5 thousand).
The share of imported cars with mileage from abroad amounted to 16.1% of the total number of purchased used cars (15 thousand).
Internal resales
On the domestic market in April, Ukrainians concluded 78,500 sales and purchase agreements for used cars. The figure was 157.3% higher than in April 2022. If compared with the previous month, March 2023, sales were 2.5% lower.
The largest number of registration transactions on the domestic market was recorded in the city of Kyiv : 12.4 thousand. Together with the Kyiv region, which took third place in the rating with 8,200 registrations, they account for 22% of the total number of used cars sold domestically during April.
Dnipropetrovsk (2nd place, 8.8 thousand), Lviv (4th place, 6.9 thousand) and Odesa (5th place, 6.4 thousand) regions are also traditionally included in the top 5 most active regions in terms of domestic resale of used cars. Such a rating can be observed for several months in a row.
The smallest number of agreements was concluded in the regions whose territories are temporarily occupied or where active hostilities are taking place: Kherson (269 agreements), Luhansk (430 agreements) and Donetsk (1,019 agreements) regions. Also, Mykolaivska (1.9 thousand deals) and Chernihivska (2 thousand deals) were among the top 5 regions with the lowest number of used car sales.region
Import of used cars
In April 2023, 15,000 used cars were brought from abroad. This indicator is 54.4% less than in April 2022, when the so-called "zero" customs clearance was in effect, and 5.1% less than in March 2022.
Like last month, the most actively registered used cars from abroad were in Lviv region (1.9 thousand units), Kyiv (1.3 thousand units) and Vinnytsia (1.2 thousand units) region.
Kyiv (1,000) and Rivne (1,000) regions were also among the most active regions in March. At the same time, in total, Kyiv together with Kyiv Oblast make up the majority of the market: 15.7%.
Kherson (17 units), Donetsk (59 units), Luhansk (104 units), Mykolaiv (184 units) and Zaporizhia (221 units) regions registered the fewest "freshly driven" cars.
