How have car prices changed in Ukraine? Results of January

Analytics

The team of the Car Market Research Institute monthly analyzes the statistical data of the Automoto.ua aggregator , which collects sales announcements for ALL cars from 100 car websites in Ukraine. Experts determined how average prices for popular models changed in January 2023, and what happened to them in the regions.

The share of budget cars in sales is growing

In January 2023, the share of cars sold on the Internet with a value of less than $10,000 amounted to 78.2%. At the same time, almost half of the total number of ads were for passenger cars priced up to $5,000: 49.5%. For comparison, in January 2022, this share was at the level of 41.3%. That is, the share of budget cars in sales has increased.

Cars priced from $10,000 to $ 20,000 accounted for 15.6% in January this year and 18.9% in January 2023.

In the range from $20 thousand to $50, the number of ads is usually the smallest: 5.4% of the total number. Last January 2022, it was slightly higher: 6.1%. On the other hand, the share of cars worth more than $50,000 almost did not change: 0.8% in January this year compared to 0.9% in January 2023.

This situation on the Ukrainian car market is primarily a consequence of the difficult economic situation and low purchasing power. In the absence of financing programs available, most cars are purchased with cash. In general, the price structure of ads on the car market shows the real capacity of Ukrainians: "mass market" is in the range of up to $10 thousand, and this is exactly the amount that most Ukrainians spend on buying a car.

The average price of a car is decreasing

The average price of a used passenger car on sale in January 2023 was $5,150. This is the lowest rate in the last 12 months: in January 2022 it was at the level of $6 thousand, in April it fell to $5,500, during May-July it remained at the level of $6 thousand, and from September it began to gradually fall.

First of all, we are talking about an increase in the number of ads for the sale of cars in the lower price category, say the Institute of Car Market Research. However, a slight decrease in the price of cars against the background of the economic crisis and exchange rate changes is expected: since most Ukrainians receive income in hryvnias, and the prices of cars on the market are formed in US dollars, now for the same money in the hryvnia equivalent, you can buy a worse car. Therefore, in order to sell a car, some sellers have to lower the price.

However, it is not possible to talk about the tendency of all cars to fall in price: from the 15 most popular models in January, only three models slightly decreased in price: Ford Focus (by -$50 or -0.8%), Mercedes-Benz E-Class (-$250 or -4.8% ) and Audi A6 (-$300 or -5%).

The average price of two VAZs was slightly higher (+$39 and +$13): 2106 and 2107, respectively. The price has not changed for the remaining 5 popular models.
